Mandy

I just heard the noise again. Something is trying to get in our house. I shift and let my wolf handle it. She’s always been good at handling whatever goes bump in the night. I watch from the back of her mind as we lope down the hall. She sniffs along the way. This is all new to her, but she moves toward the noise and ignores everything along the way. She stops and listens when she gets to the living room. She looks back toward the bedroom for a second when she hears something behind her, but she decides to go into the kitchen.

She trots over to the glass slider and looks out through the glass. She growls; it’s low and guttural. I feel the anger and fear in her and force the shift. I know who I’ll see, because the feeling is familiar. I stand up as my human self, and Teagan beckons me outside. I crack the door open.

“Go away, Teagan. Leave me alone,” I whisper-shout at him. I don’t want to wake Dawson if I can handle this on my own.

“Come out, Mandy. You owe me that much. I need to talk to you.”

I shake my head.

“Come on. I swear, no funny business. I just want to have my say, then I’ll go. Promise.”

He crosses his heart. He’s never lied after doing that. I listen for Dawson for a second then step out. I cross my arms over my breasts. Teagan has seen me naked a million times, but I feel self-conscious this time.

“What do you want?” I’m short with him because I don’t want him to think that stopping by in the middle of the night is okay. I’m also still sleepy.

“Just tell me why.” He puts his hands on his hips, and for a second my body responds. Teagan always did appeal to me when he was barefoot and in jeans the way he is now. He knows what he’s doing.

“Why what?” I steel myself against my reaction to him. My heart and mind do not want him, my wolf hates him, but my body misses him.

“Why did you leave me?”

I almost laugh. “Why did I leave you? You left me, Teagan. You never said a word and you left with that girl. Everyone else knew that you were leaving with her, but you fucked me and never mentioned that you were going with her. You never said ‘Oh, by the way, Mandy, I’m screwing this human and we’re going to run off together.’ Do you have any idea what happened to me after that? No, because you left! You wouldn’t answer my calls or my texts, my mother put me out, Al said he was kicking me out of the pack, I had no money and no place to go. That meant that I was living on the street. What did you think would happen?”

“Hey, I didn’t know that your mom was putting you out. I figured you would be okay without me for a while.
